I agree, having learned at Quonset Point, RI (Class D).  I have a ZAON 
MRX collision avoidance device that listens to transponders and tells 
you if one's at your altitude and how far away and if they're level, 
climbing or descending.  Not much - a little like an auto's radar 
detector, but it gives me a little comfort.  It unfortunately is 
fallible - once I had a glider silently flash in front of me right to 
left.  Soon saw the pilot on the ground and he said he had a Mode C 
Xponder going - if so, my unit somehow missed it.
