Once when returning from Colorado, I was flying above clouds. Contacted FSS at Jackson, MS for weather ahead. Was informed that about 10 miles ahead clouds disappeared and it was clear into Panama City. Within 5 minutes I was in clouds. Did a 180 and landed at a neat airstrip in the middle of nowhere. Walked to a nearby house and called Jackson airport. They said if I got there within 45 minutes it would be clear, but that weather was moving in. They said it was closed in all the way tothe Gulf. The person I spoke with informed me that there was one person that routinely purposely flew VFR into clouds as he got a kick out of it. Things turned out ok as I got a great seafood dinner at the motel where I stayed overnight. Never did learn the name of the fellow who gave me bad info for kicks. Lee

SoCal / LA basin often has MVFR with no cloud (3 miles in haze is common) with no cloud, or easily avoidable cloud (dissipating coastal stratus). My goal is to avoid the clouds. Deliberately flying VFR into clouds is a bad idea however; I'll refrain from any name calling. What do you call them? I call us “bold pilots” who’ve just gone to “take a look” to see if we could get through. You know the saying about old and bold pilots. Many of us have survived and gotten over being “bold pilots.” Others did not survive that experience and, when we remember them, we might discuss their final mistake as we encourage listeners to not be bold pilots.
