IMHO - The few MPH lost is a good trade off for better visibility in the busy LA Basin, or for night flying / landings (10% of my flying is at night flying, from CNO to O69). That's something to consider, beyond the few MPH lost in speed.
I know there are many faster Coupes out there however; my Coupe still managed to win a X-C air race or two with the landing gear lights mounted (Copper State Dash & Golden West Air Race back when Aircraft Spruce was still sponsoring them), so the lights aren't exactly 'boat anchors'. It really shouldn't make any difference in local pleasure flying, and would only make a difference on the occasional X-C flight when you're trying to get some where, and even then the difference is less than 5%. It may cost me roughly an extra 10 or 12 minutes in a 4+ hour flight from (CNO to O69). However I tend to fly X-C at higher altitudes, lean aggressively, and generally burn the same or less fuel for a given trip than most of the other Coupes (Maynard Smith excepted), even with the landing lights. Fly the way you want and be happy, and to each their own!
