Gil,

ANY plane can get a fairly quick corrosion problem with a liberal
application of mouse-pee. Rainwater takes a lot longer to cause corrosion
but it depends a lot on what's mixed in with the water.

Ercoupes and Forneys, with the slide-down door/windows flow rainwater
through the belly when tied out (unless you have an impervious canopy
cover). Alons and Mooney M-10s, with their slide-back canopy at least
wouldn't have that problem. But even the latest Mooney M-10 is pushing 34
years old and that's enough time for corrosion to have formed.

My Coupe was quite clean in its center section when John Wright, Sr.,
inspected it before I sold it to John, Jr. (He's beautifying it for
resale.) To keep it that way, I bought it corrosion free and paid for
hangar space, usually having to drive past closer airports to a more
distant
airport, which had a hangar available and affordable. Also, for many
years,
I had a mechanic who washed the plane inside and out as part of the annual
inspection, saying that it gave him the chance to inspect every inch of
the
plane.

I would not count on any old plane being corrosion free till it's
inspected.
After you inspect it, KEEP THOSE MICE OUT OF IT!!! Nice wheel boxes can
do
well to keep the mice out if you can't hangar the plane or if the hangar
is
close to the grass. Hangar the plane if you can or get a good canopy
cover
if you can't hangar it.

If you have a clean plane, I'd say that with mouse boxes for the wheels
and
a canopy cover, even a tied out airplane should have little prospect for
future corrosion problems. With good care, some of these planes could
well
fly on their 100th birthdays.

Thanks, Ed. Are the corrosion problems restricted to 415 coupes, or do
the Alons and Forneys also have the problem?
