   I agree with you that cruising up high can add range when there is a
strong wind. But for normal every day flying around, I dont find the
O-200 to be very efficiant. I am hardpressed to get mine below 7.5
gal/hr. I have the marvel carb too.

Hi All:
    Cruising up high isn't about the wind, it's about efficiency. I also
have an O-200 engine in my coupe (99843).
    When cruising at higher altitudes, 8.5 to 12.5, at full throttle I
will consistently be in the very low 4 GPH range and occasionally will
get below 4 GPH. This is the average for the total time from liftoff to
touchdown on a three to four hour flight without getting into the header
tank.
    If you are burning 7.5 GPH you are using very high power or running
very rich or there is something wrong.
