Alan; The red stuff is Mil H 5606 hydraulic fluid, however, unless the

seals have been changed, it is supposed to be a vegetable oil base brake
fluid. The seals were natural rubber in all Coupes prior to SN 813. With
the
strut extended, the fluid level is supposed to be at the "red" mark which
is
approximately 11 inches below the top of that "snaky thing" you removed.
When
in the static (read compressed as on taxi spring) position, the level is
supposed to be at the green mark (approximately 6 inches below the top of
the
"snaky thing"
I have found that almost all of the nose struts I have worked on
show
wear on the brass bushing at the bottom of the strut (held in by those 4
little screws you see) which costs about $100. Sometimes the upper bumper
disintegrates ( it is a large rubber washer under the fitting that "snaky
thing" screws in to. About 1/2 of the struts have needed a new seal on the

piston assembly.
I recommend that you read Service Memorandum No. 41, before you
take
anything apart. The strut itself is easy to remove after you have taken
out
the two bolts that hold it in the engine mount, but getting everything
disassembled is not quite so easy.
