I understand that the accepted method of killing an aircraft engine is to go full lean/cut off and starve it to death.  But...on my Coupe, you couldn't lean it enough for it to die.  My mixture wasn't wired full rich, and it did work to lean the engine at high altitude, but it would not shut the fuel completely off.  I did however try putting it in gear and popping the clutch, but I couldn't get the knack so I stopped trying.

ps-For those who care,  my method was to motor to the tie down, run her up to about 1200 rpm, and cut the mags.

True enough, Larry.  If that is hou YOU kill your engine.  When I trained
in the Cessna 150, we used the lean cut off method.
It was explained to me at the time that leaving fuel available in the
engine (ie, just snapping off the mags) primed it to start
if the P-lead was broken.  So I turn my Ercoupe off by shutting off the
fuel to the carb.  It takes longer, but I have to turn it
off anyway to keep fuel from leaking out of the carb due to the needle
seating.
And the shut-off-the-mags-at-idle suggestion was for occasional use.  I
feel it is a good check a couple times a year.
