You can put it in experimental class and leave it there from now on depending on what class you put it in. You are correct in the one you mention for testing purposes it is temporary. You can get into experimental for the purpose of trying to do the proving flights for a modification such as a different engine but a certificated aircraft like a Coupe can not stay in any experimental category indefinitely. The deal that people would like to do is get it into Experimental Homebuilt" so that they can make changes and do the annual maintenance themselves. For the most part they would not have the background or education to do this safely and as they have not built the FAA required 51% the FAA just says no. The Canadians have a deal that works for them but we have yet to see how it will work out over time and if they are able to sell the aircraft when they are done with them. Have a good day.
