Secondly, what I was trying to say is that if one's annuals are done annually and include cleaning the strainer, then one likely does not need to be concerned that the strainer would fail unexpectedly. Are you saying that the corrosion went from nonexistent to such an advanced state that failure was a real possibility, between annuals?
