When I went to A&P school I was taught the same. By the way read any book
and the book will agree!

that's what we used to teach them when I taught A & P school- the
position that the switch is switched to is supposed to represent what mag
you are running off of.  L should allow the engine to run on the left
mag, with the right mag grounded, and vice verse.
