I coated the cork with epoxy and gained bouancy, as measured by the wire indicator in the header cap of approx. 5/8ths inch. As long as the epoxy doesn't melt into the carburetor,I suppose it was worth the small effort involved.
 
Incidentally, I have WW II type DG and AH ( working), both of which I will swap for a VSI that works.... Jack...5466F
