The airspeed, VSI, and altimeter should all be connected to static air. On an Ercoupe, the static line comes from the pitot tube's static port via one of two tubes that connect just inside the left aileron. If there's something wrong with the static line, it's not uncommon for some hack to have just disconnected the static system, and thus use 'Polish alternate air' rather than the proper static system. The problem with that is that the cockpit pressure varies wildly in flight, whether or not the canopy is open, which makes it even worse. The pitot/static system should have been a pre-buy inspection point. Regardless, you need to restore the static system to factory spec before the aircraft is legal.
