With the sensitive analog EGTs, the scale is such that you need to
adjust the needle position.  While that kind of EGT shows temperature
changes with GREAT detail (1/4 inch / 25 degrees), that adjustability
means that you don't know the absolute temp.

You adjust the mixture to find the peak EGT (adjusting the gauge to keep
the needle on the scale) then enrich the mixture to the desired number
of degrees on the rich side.  Then you adjust the gauge again to put the
needle on a reference mark so you can easily see any deviation from the
temp you've set.

But you never know the absolute temp.

Perhaps if you can get approval to install one of the new digital EGTs,
you could get sensitivity and know the absolute scale.
