I have heard that you are supposed to fill the header tank first then the wing tanks. Is this true? I heve never filled the header, tank only the wing tanks.

That's the way it is done.  The header fills by the pump, so you never have to put fuel in it.  With the attendent risk of sloshing
fuel all over a hot engine!

C'mon, guys!

If one uses their coupe for cross-country flight, the nose tank holds somewhere between five and six gallons usable fuel (depending on nose tank fitted).  Knowledgeable pilots keep regular record of their fuel burn in gallons per hour flown.

I use the worst figure in the previous year for figuring fuel consumption in flight planning.  Assuming that might be 4.2 gallons per hour, I "set aside" 1/2 hour "untouchable" reserve each time I land (daytime flight) and almost always use some fuel capacity of my header tank (after the fuel in my wing tanks is exhausted).

The header tank must then be refilled before filling the wing tanks.
