I'd wonder about the "top open," Allen.  It is well known that an Ercoupe
flies with more lift when the top is a) closed if two-window system, or
b) has the center piece centered on a three-window system.  Reason
is smooth air flow over the fuselage, which is acting as a lifting body.
   Try it with the top up before you go any farther/spend more money.
