Sean,
Holy Cow!  I've never heard of that one.  Your A&P might of been correct, that is if there was one heck of an exhaust leak sometime in your aircraft history.  I do mean flames licking the side of the cowl type leak.  Most Ercoupe cowls meet their demise from engine vibrations and aerodynamic pressures battering them.  I've seen a lot of cracked cowls stop drilled in my time, and many of them requiring a patch or repair of some type.  I'm afraid that some mechanics out there are too quick to do the stop drill when really a patch is required.
Have you tried to contact Vernon Gregory at Precision Services?  He may be able to help you obtaining a cowl since he is parting out quite a few Ercoupe airframes.  I've had good luck with him.  He can be contacted by calling him at 1-803-796-2605 or [EMAIL PROTECTED]
