----[Please read http://ercoupers.com/disclaimer.htm before following any advice in this forum.]----Steve,
The issue here is weight. I've seen the heavier automotive type exhaust clamps (illegal) used and were clamped so tight that they crushed the exhaust pipe and muffler stub. I've seen worm type clamps used also but were too weak. They would break from the cyclic heat stress.
Use the type clamps specified. Make sure that only one of the exhaust clamps has an alignment pin. That will allow for expansion and contraction between the left and right exhaust stack to the muffler. Otherwise your looking at stress cracks on the exhaust stacks.
You should have a snug fit between the exhaust stacks and the muffler. This "nearly new" muffler you speak of, if this snug fit doesn't exist would raise doubts on what history this muffler has.
