Louis,
Through the years maintaining that type of fuel indicator, I
have
repaired and built new ones by going to a hardware or fishing supply store
and purchasing the largest cork that will easily pass through the fill
neck.
I have either used the old wire or picked up a new one at a hobby shop
selling model airplane supplies. Cut and fit to old one, and I have always
used Indian Head shellac, applying 2 - 3 coats, drying between each.
Available at most auto supply houses. Some now use fuel resistant epoxy.
Shellac works for me.
