During the inspection of the generator brushes the A&P and I got into a discussion about which way the tube on the brush cover goes.
The tube is supposed to be connected via SCAT tubing or the like to the aft baffle. Continental specifies a minimum pressure of 1.5" of water across the generator for cooling. (See figure 14 in the C-Series overhaul manual.) Unlike an alternator, which has an internal fan, the generator does not self ventilate. This is often overlooked, but for long generator life it is a must. Some aircraft types were produced without a vent there! Even Continental is inconsistent as figure 12 shows the naked tube pointed at about the 8 o'clock position viewed from the back. PN 40704-4 (or 40704-7, depending on who you believe) was introduced with the Alon, and is the tube from the baffle to the generator. Apparently 415s and Forneys were produced without any forced ventilation for the generator.
