As noted, generators do not put much out until about 1700 RPM. But do you really have a problem? I have had the standard 14 Amp generator on my coupe for 14 years and had no problems running a transponder (King tube type), Narco com radio, and an Apollo GPS with moving map. I occasionally turn on a halogen landing light (but the ampmeter shows a discharge when I do). I did replace the mechanical voltage regulator with the zeftronics electronic one (but only because my plane had the wrong voltage regulator and the moder one costs the same as the mechanical one). On shut down, after taxiing in, I always run the engine at 1700 RPM for a minute or so to make sure the battery is charged and have never had a problem starting. If my generator ever fails I might consider replacing it with an alternator (but then I have to worry about upgrading the wiring for the higher current.) If it ain't broke why fix it? I haven't studied the system much, but I notice that the generator isn't very effective at charging the battery at low engine speeds. Is there an alternator available? Is there a solid-state product to assist in charging at low speeds? Is this problem more complicated than it looks? > > Wes Sherman > ========================================================================== ==== > To leave this forum go to: http://ercoupers.com/lists.htm > Search the archives on http://escribe.com/aviation/coupers-tech/ > > > ========================================================================== ==== To leave this forum go to: http://ercoupers.com/lists.htm Search the archives on http://escribe.com/aviation/coupers-tech/
