Title: Flight test
----[Please read http://ercoupers.com/disclaimer.htm before following any advice in this forum.]----

Hi to all,
Just a point of discussion...I took my check ride last month in my coupe with no problem at all.  Mine is a D conversion, so the gross weight was not an issue.  The examiner had a lot of questions for me about the flight characteristics of the Ercoupe (he was familiar with the aircraft, and wanted to make sure I was too!) and in the end he issued the certificate with no restrictions, even though I have no rudder pedals.  I did, however, have a few hours of instruction in a 172 prior to my purchase of the coupe. My instructor felt that starting in the 172 and logging stalls, spin awareness and slips and then transitioning to the coupe was the key to sucess.  Anyway, it worked for me!
Good luck!

Jack,

You can read in the FAQ some detailed answers to some of your questions at:

Search for:

install rudder pedals

“TWO TYPES of rudder pedal kits”

I think your CFI is overestimating the time it takes to transition to using rudder pedals.  I’d be surprised if it took more than 2-4 hours to re-polish his technique before the checkride, but then there’s the issue of transitioning to another plane just before the checkride – that takes some transition time, too.  Once a pilot is experienced with hundreds of hours of flying time, I think the transition would come quicker.  For a student with 50-60 hours, it might take longer than you want to pay for.

You could certainly save a BUNCH of money doing the lessons in the Coupe.  You might have to take the instructor up to give him/her some Coupe transition training before the instructor teaches your son how to fly a Coupe.  Mostly in demonstrating the low speed behavior and crabbed landings.

First, I’d suggest you research the designated pilot examiner you intend to use.  Find out how much he weighs.  Add it to your son’s weight and be sure you’re legal for the checkride.  If that is OK, then you can consider pedals on the Coupe.  (I had to use a larger plane for my lessons and checkride because of this issue.  :-(|   )

The Alon pedal kit is just like all other planes with ground steering on the pedals. By turning the ailerons into the wind after landing, you can handle some ridiculous cross winds.  (Without pedals, Coupes are already the last ones in the air on strongly windy days.)

But all rudder pedals cramp your legs.  They cramp the passenger’s legs even more as the passenger tries to keep their feet off the pedals.  A bit awkward on short flights and more of a problem on long cross country trips.

I wish I could give you information on the availability and cost of rudder pedal kits.  Good luck on finding some.

I have a son that wishes to learn to fly.  I understand that a coupe with rudder pedals can be used in the FAA flight test.  I understand that the rudders pedals for the coupe come in two types.  Could someone explain the two types, their pros and cons, installation times and cost of the units.  I was going to buy some time in a piper for my son to take the check ride; however the instructor is talking about 10 to 12 hours to "transitions" to the "rudder" plane just to take the check ride.  I was wondering if it may be better to put the rudder pedals in my coupe since the cost of the piper and instructor is about $115 an hour.  Thanks in advance for the responses.  One of the great things about the coupe is the owner support.  I have restored 99476 with the help and the advice of the readers of this tech line.  Thanks for all.
