Don,
This particular predicament are some
of the things I'd wish to see for myself. Please verify that this
"pop" emanates from the spring stack assembly. Do you have a measurement
of the spring stack height before and after this "pop"? If this
measurement is the same we must look elsewhere. What differs from our
past e-mails is the popping sound along with dimension change after that
sound is what alerts me structure. Be it outer wing, center
wing, or possibly landing gear mounting hardware.
Before going into a complete wing
teardown, another thing to try. It's a bit labor intensive.
Swap the main landing gear outer cylinders (with the spring stack) and see if
this particular popping sound and dimension change discrepancy follows that
assembly to the right side. If it does, further troubleshooting on
that part is required. If not and the left wing remains low, start looking
at structure.
Your mechanics found grease inside the
left strut instead of hydraulic fluid? I find that odd. I'm
wondering how the internal surfaces of the outer strut are, the surfaces where
the o-ring will slide on during ground operations, bottom of the strut.
I'm assuming your mechanics smoothed out any grooves on the
outer cylinder when they replaced the spring pack to prevent binding
and cleaned the internal portions of the cylinder
assembly. Just checking, no insult intended but this popping really
concerns me.
I'd hate to start tearing the wing
structure apart before exhausting all avenues concerning the landing gear
strut. Please keep us informed on your findings.

Subject: [COUPERS-TECH] LOW WING
----[Please read http://ercoupers.com/disclaimer.htm before following any advice in this forum.]----
My 65 ALON A-2 withm 1800 hrs TTSN wants to sit and taxi with the
left wingtip about 5 inches lower than the right one. In flight, both wings
are normal. I have just had mechanics jack up each Main Gear strut and install
(7) new Belleville springs in each, plus draining and refilling the
hydfaulics. There was grease in the left strut, and one broken spring in
the right strut, but no visible damage or distortion. The LH wing is
still low. If I lift the LH wing up at the wingtip, it "pops" (the spring
stack) and stays up in place. However, upon taxiing, it again goes low. I have
reviewed the log books back 40 years, and cannot find anything to account for
this condition,
Any ideas out there?
