Hello Dave::

Welcome to Coupedom!  I hope you enjoy your Coupe for a long time.

Learning to refuel an Ercoupe/Aircoupe is almost an artform, and requires Monitoring by the pilot constantly to minimize problems.

Usually the fuel smell is the result of a fuselage tank spill or overflow. The spilled fuel will run down the neck of the fuel tank, over the top of the fuel tank and down the inside of the outer skin, saturating what is left of the insulation and upholstery, resulting in the constant fuel smell.

I normally don't exhaust the center tank if I don't have to, and when I do I fuel it myself, very carefully, with a step stool or fueling ladder so I can see the amount of fuel in the tank.  A couple of inches down in the center tank is about a pint of fuel.  Fill the header tank last.  Right wing first then the left, then the center tank if you have to.

As a final check make sure the wing fuel caps are installed properly or you will spill fuel out of the wing tanks at high angles of attack.  Alons do not need wing tank venting, but do need fuselage tank vents, also there are different gaskets for auto fuel and aviation fuel.

If you get curious, and check the accident histories of Coupes, you will find most of the problems to be fuel related.

Subject: [COUPERS-TECH] Gasoline Odor

----[Please read http://ercoupers.com/disclaimer.htm before following any advice in this forum.]----

Hi,  I am a new coupe owner.  Have 1965  Alon # A-46.  I have strong odor of gasoline in the cockpit it I leave the canopy closed while parked.  Can not find any drips.  Any one have any ideas.  I don't fully understand the fuel system on this. Would like to see a good explanation of it.  Thanks,  Dave Smith
