Roger,

Most of us have known great FAA people like you. I fondly remember Ned
the Fed (retired long ago) who came to our Iowa regional flyins in the
'80s. He'd look at everything, legal and not, and give good, sensible
advice and information. He never violated anyone when he was there as
our guest and we learned a lot from him. He helped flying safety a lot.

Bill Coon's acquaintance (now retired) who was an FAA staffer and a
Coupe rebuilder and who approved the landing gear spacer has helped
flying safety a LOT!

Over the years, it seems like guys like you, Bill's friend and Ned have
mostly retired and been replaced by people with far fewer roots in
general aviation.

But we've also heard of FAA wienies who wouldn't approve a split
elevator mod for a Coupe and that's a mod with no downside. Over the
years, I've come to advise people who want to improve their Coupe that
even with a well known and obviously good change, they need to get the
FAA to approve the paperwork before they cut metal.

For people like you and Ned the Fed, I have to say, "Thank you for
taking care of us."

I know you believe you understand what you think I said, but I am not
sure if you realize that what you heard is not what I meant. (Jim, AKA

"but keep in mind that refer to
members of an unelected agency comprised of career bureaucrats that has
already achieved every politician's dream...unlimited (personal)
authority without meaningful (personal) responsibility!"

Wow....I really felt that my 34 years in the FAA, trying to provide the
best
possible service to our customers, and also having devoted the past 46
years
to flying and aircraft ownership, through the years occasionally made me
a
welcome member of our collective aviation fellowship. I never realized
that
I had only achieved the status of the above quote. I think I'll turn
in my
cook's hat at the next EAA monthly breakfast and tell them I'm not
worthy.
