Hi Ron: I'm sorry, I thought I read in your first message that the rudder bell crank on the control mast had some play
I refer to the control mast as the assembly behind the seat which has bell cranks for the rudder and the ailerons, the control column is the assembly under the fuselage tank.
Yes, there should be no play between the center shaft and the outside tube of the control column. As Hartmut (or someone else) said, the bushings should be oiled every annual, and I believe the maintenance manual says every 25 hours. I indicated that you needed two people to properly check out the control system (after you get the weight safely off the nose wheel). With you inside, have someone else move the nose wheel slowly and only a little at a time, left and right. You need to observe the controls starting with the rod ends on the bottom of the control column and work your way up to the control wheel to see where the play or binding is located. You also need to check the nose gear end of the steering mechanism for any and all play.
As others have said, you may find this is all OK, and the problem is elsewhere, but you have already indicated there is some play in the control column between the inner shaft and outer housing. I suspect you will find several places that there is play ( the nose wheel moves left and right and the controls do not)
Good luck in your search and please let us know what you find is the problem. It could be something we have not thought of or seen, and we all want to know about it.
Lynn
