Just to wade into the discussion about engine
overhaul costs, I recently had my C90 reworked. I am
running Owner Maintenance under the Canadian rules,
however the work was all done by a certified shop
which has a good local reputaton. I worked with a
mechanic to remove the jogs and split the case. It took about
two hours. The cylinders were overhauled, and one
was replaced with an overhauled unit because of a crack
in the rocker boss. (It could have been repaired).
The bottom end was magnifluxed, and the crank and
camshaft were all withn limits. (not within
overhaul limits but well within service limits). The engine was
reassembled
with new rod bolts and other "replacables". We also
had to replace a starter gear and the starter drive. The total
cost was about 55 hundred dollars. Now I know this
is not a "zero time" but it is an engine that I am very comfortable
flying with for years to come. I remember reading a
flying magazine article a few years ago which talked about
the various options for re-doing your engine, and
this was one of them. If do not fly 100 to 200 hours a year, do you really need
the 12K overhaul(average price in Canadian $ for a small block continental
overhaul) with a zero time engine, or do you need to open the engine every
10-15 years or so and make sure everything inside is safe.
I should note that I removed the engine and replace
it myself. Even though this is the second time I have done that it
still took "way to long" to reinstall it and deal
with the dozens of spring clamps and all the other bits and pieces.
On the subject of slick mags I replaced mine a few
years ago and it cost me 11-12 hundred bucks Canadian,. Installation was no more
than a couple of hours.
