Actually, it's the field coils of the generator that need to be 
flashed.  the purpose is to induce a little residual magnetism in the
field 
coil poles so the generator can self excite.  The engine does not have to 
be running; for that matter, the generator doesn't even need to be
installed.

Being an alternator kind of guy, I have to reinvent the wheel each time, 
but basically, figure out if the regulator is controlling the hot or
ground 
side of the field then either touch the field wire to hot or ground for a 
few seconds, 4 or 5 times.
