Try installing a BNC connector to the top of the fuselage just behind the cockpit. Plug in the rubber duckie  Then run a length of coax to the radio.  I used that arrangement for years and it increased the range considerably. You probably will not need a pre amp.  You can remove the antenna after flying.
You might possibly need a 337 to do this legally. but should be no problem

Guys - My hand held doesn't have enough range.  Had some problems flying into Dallas Addison because I couldn't contact the tower before getting inside the controlled air space.

However, I have found that you can buy an amplifier that will increase the power outage to 10 watts - about what a panel mounted radio will do.  Aircraft Spruce has this item in their catalog.

My question : Has anyone tried to do this?  The installation is simple.  The amp has a BNC connection for the radio imput, another for the antenna outlet and a positive and ground wire connection.
