I know you already have your mind made up, and
nothing will change your mind, but I gotta say a few things.
1.) Aircraft communications are
done by utilizing AM or Amplitude Modulation techniques. AM is notoriously
short range limited by lack of modulation, not lack of power.
2.) a 10 watt amplifier will
result in 3 db of gain which is just a slight bit above a discernable difference
in loudness. Not a gain of 10 times.
3.) With a hand held there may be a
problem in obtaining enough of a voltage to adequately bias the electret
microphone in the average headset.
4.) If you are using the enclosed
microphone on the handset are you truly speaking into the inbuilt microphone,
and are you speaking loud enough.
5.) I would suggest that more will be
gained by examining the system you have been working with, and whether you are
using it to the best of it's ability. Aircraft noise in an Ercoupe can be
a true demon to work with.
Just some thoughts.

I already had the hand held hooked to an external antenna and that wasn't enough. I had one response from one Couper who had the amplifier and he says it works great. Thanks again for the encouragement. I'll post a short report when I get my amp installed and working for the benefit of others who fly with hand held radio's
