Hi Chuck
I put my cover on when the outside air temp is around 45 deg. F., and it works fine.  Never an overheating problem.

Folks

Okay, I bought my coupe in the spring, so I have never flown it in the winter yet. I also keep the plane in NH (very cold place) . Also, I have not asked a newbie questions in a long time so I fleel the need to ask two questions!

1) From what I read below, do people really cover up 100% of the air intake on their engines in the winter to keep them warm or am I reading this wrong?

2) I know your supposed to watch the oil temp, but at what OAT do they start to put them in / take them out?

Hi Bettina and Bob,
    1.  Trace the shape to the opening in the nosebowl onto a sheet of stiff paper, and add about 5/8" to that shape in all directions.
    2.  Transfer that pattern to a piece of 0.025" Alclad aluminum, carefully cut it out and smooth the edges with a file.  This is your Cold Weather Plate.
    3.  Locate and drill holes about 3/8" from the edge in each corner for #6 screws.
    4.  Transfer the hole locations to the nosebowl carefully, using clecos after the first hole is drilled, so alignment is good.
    5.  Install a 6-32 Rivnut or nutplate (I prefer nutplates) in each of the new holes in the nosebowl.
    6.  Put a layer of duct tape on the back side of the new Cold Weather Plate to cushion it from the nosebowl so it won't chafe the nosebowl.
    7.  Paint or polish the front side! of the Cold Weather Plate as necessary, and install it on the airplane with 4 ea. 6-32 screws.

Happy flying,

Syd

Hi All...

I'm looking for information, pictures, drawings etc for the cold weather kit for the Ercoupe. I saw the ad for one in an old Skyport catalogue, circa 1990, and thought instead of using cardboard and tape I might try something a bit more dignified. I believe the kit had instructions on how to manufacture a plate to block off a portion of the cooling air intake under the engine case.

Any help is greatly appreciated, as the temps here are starting to dip.

Thanks very much again.

Cheers
