Some Alon's have a generator field switch.

Interesting.

The steps included seem to be specific to the Zeftronics regulator, specifically where it reads: " turn on the GEN FLD switch". My take is that this is a switch in the Zeftronics regulator.

Anyone knows the steps to flash the generator with a normal (non Zeftronics) regulator?

Steven

I just helped out an owner of a Cessna to flash the Generator.

His went to refusal of work despite being overhauled a while ago. He even had a new regulator.

We followed the outlined instruction and fired up his engine. It just worked. His alternator came to life. Since I never experienced this kind of trouble with a generator, I was amazed by the simple fix.

Maybe you are as lucky as my fellow Cessna pilot.

A excerpt of a Zeftronics manual follows. If needed, I can send you the full PDF file.

TROUBLE-SHOOTING TYPE A 12 TO 50 AMP DELCO-REMY

SINGLE ENGINEGENERATOR SYSTEMS

By: Femi G. Ibitayo

CHECKING THE RESIDUAL VOLTAGE AND

POLARITY OF THE GENERATOR

Connect a voltmeter between the generator’s ARM and

ground. At 1300 RPM, the generator output or residual

voltage should be positive (greater than +1.6V).

Residual Voltage __________V @ __________RPM

A negative voltage reading indicates a generator that

has a reverse polarity. Do not connect the GCU to a

generator with reversed polarity.

Turn off the engine and Polarize the generator by

flashing the field.

HOW TO FLASH THE GENERATOR’S FIELD:

1. With the engine off, disconnect the Generator

Controller (GCU) / Regulator

2. Ground the Field wire removed from the GCU

and turn on the GEN FLD switch

At the GCU: Touch the battery wire to the generator’s

armature wire 5 times for 3-5 seconds. Caution: Take

safety precaution to prevent being hurt by electrical

sparks generated by touching the two wires.

3. Connect a voltmeter between the generator’s

ARM and ground. At 1300 RPM, the generator

output or residual voltage should be >+1.6V.

ARM Voltage ________V @ _________RPM

List,

I am having some charging system problems here and I just can't figure them out.

I had the generator rebuilt , and the regulator tested.. Both were found good, although I did not stand over the tech to see the results.

But when I installed the generator, I do not get anything like a full output, and that is with the field grounded.

I thought it was a problem of not getting high enough revs on the ground. But today I went for my first flight after all my rebuild work. The plane flies beautifully, and I am particularly proud of how smooth the ignition is since I re-installed the mags and timed them myself. (I am running on the Canadian owner maintenance provision so I can do that).

But my digital voltmeter which I have stuck in the lighter socket is not going above about 12.1 and not showing any real increase once the cruise rpm comes up to 2200.

The only thing I have not done yet is to open the plan up and see if it comes up at higher full power cruise revs.

Before I pull the generator once more ( a pretty ugly job if you have done it) do you have any advice?

I am going to post this as well in the hopes of finding someone who has had a similar experience.

It almost makes me want to tear the system out and convert to the alternator but that is big bux.

Thanks
