Curtis used to sell replacement seals for these drains. It is not an O-ring; it is a tiny flat washer. An O-ring will not work right as it will jam in the sealing area. The reason they stopped selling them is that the rivet-like attachment that holds the metal washer on the end, which is what keeps the core from exiting the aircraft, was failing after high time. The solution: no repairs, replace.

The threads on these units are pipe threads. No locking agent is required or necessary. A little fuel lube helps seal things, but I'm willing to bet that the one on WRB's plane was never properly tightened. Had it been, the sealant would not have washed out even if it was soluble as the threads would have sealed the gas in sufficiently by themselves, and the torque on the threads would have held it in place in the absence of any solvent. Only if there was "space" between the threads, occupied by sealant, could the loss of sealant have allowed it to back out.
