Harder to do because variables make it difficult to discern small RPM changes, but definitely less stressful. One thing I always do is grab something behind me with one hand so that I can't move into the prop arc without letting go. Then, don't let go...

Might there be a particular  RPM range that 's best when attempting the
adjustment.

600 RPM is the desired idle speed for a Stromberg equipped engine, so shoot for 625 then richen to 600.
