Ok, Guys,
I was able to download 25 fuel -related ALON accident investigation findings
over the past 40 years. I have read each and every one, and can find little
or no evidence that the ALON/MOONEY Service Bulletin No.19 woukd have
prevented any (perhaps a few?) of these accidents. They were caused - in most
cases - by pilot error and improper maintenance; not by the fuel system
design. Here are samplings of some of the accident causes as determined by
NTSB:
4 pilot lost/disoriented, ran out of fuel
3 pilot pulled MIXTURE to lean, thinking he was selecting carb heat
3 fuel contamination , water, insects, paint chips, dirt
1 intentional aerobatics, lost left wing (can't see how this is fuel
related)
1 cockpit wing tank shutoff valve closed
1 stolen aircraft - suicide (after he ran out of fuel)
1 incorrect fuel pump installed, no fuel to header tank
1 cracked gascolator bowl
1 non-STC'd auto fuel flow gage attached to furl transfer pump -
restricted flow to header
A cause common to several other accidents, was lost/disoriented pilots low
on fuel, but engine still running, severely damaging the airplane on the
off- runway landing.
