Creating the  Sport Pilot categories (license and aircraft certification) was intended to start a new industry of aircraft design and manufacturing, and bring a new group of fliers into recreational/sport aviation.  The fact that a bunch of old vintage aircraft (Ercoupe, Aeronca, Cub, etc) and old vintage airmen without a medical happened to fall into the criteria established for the new proposed designs and license was only a by product of the event, not its intended purpose.  So the cut offs are there, established by the new industry, without much consideration for whatever else get included.  We were lucky that EAA fought for an increase on gross weight and stall speed from the original proposal to the final draft.  Otherwise, no Ercoupe and even my Aeronca Chief would not have made it.  Maybe someday there will be further increases.  In the mean time, the cut offs are established.  Now reference flying a non LSA aircraft without being properly licensed.  Really what are the consequences of flying without a medical at all, or flying IFR without an instrument rating, not having a current BFR, and the list goes on.  None...unless you get caught..and what's really the chance.  In my 34 FAA years I was always amazed at how many, many airman are doing all of the above (and more).  But many of these did eventually have some occurance that required a records check, and then the truth was known.  As they say..."whatever your career will bear" or "you pay your money and take your chances".  roger

Hello -

  • What are the consequences of flying a plane that doesn't fit into the sport category by a few pounds using a sport pilot license?

  • What are the odds of anyone being aware of the difference between a C, CD, D, E etc.?

I am not in favor of breaking the law, but quite frankly, in my opinion, the other criteria of being a sport plane, stall speed,
etc., seems more relevant than weight.
