Remember, everyone, the Sport rule says "if the airplane has EVER (emphasis is mine) been operated out of the Sport limitations it can NEVER been flown by a Sport Pilot."

Jeff,

It looks like you are going to be a test case to see how this issue comes out.

Since the 337 was filed, there’s a permanent trace in the FAA paperwork that shows the conversion was done.  But, does that constitute a “legal” conversion or a “mistake” that can be backed out?

If you really want to make this come out as a C model for Sport, I’d urge you to consult with an aviation lawyer.  Perhaps Russ Jensen, former EOC Regional Director, lawyer and Air Guard squadron commander would be a good person or would guide you to someone appropriate.  Or, perhaps the AOPA or EAA could guide you to a good aviation lawyer.

The trick is to make this issue come out the way you (we) WANT it to come out.  A ruling, saying that it is “necessary” to have the airworthiness certificate changed to make the change “real” would benefit all the Sport Pilots of the future.

Bill Coons, would you please review what you found out last year?  I can’t remember the details of the report you gave us.

This is an important issue since so many of the others here are just one doctor’s exam away from being a Sport Pilot.  (Can’t say one AME medical exam anymore because if you bust that (like I did) you’re out of luck.)

Keep in touch and we’ll see if / how much we can help you.

Subject: [COUPERS-TECH] 415D conversion

----[Please read http://ercoupers.com/disclaimer.htm before following any advice in this forum.]----

I have just purchased a 415C serial #1541 that was converted to a D model in 1970. The appropriate 337 forms were filed and the placards and data plate were changed accordingly. However the owner never had the air worthiness certificate changed. I am now trying to straighten this out with the FAA, but they seem to be a bit confused as to what they should do. If anyone has recently performed this conversion, I would greatly appreciate any info on your dealings with the FAA in  obtaining a revised air worthiness certificate.
Thanks,
~Jeff
