John,
As usual your comments were right on the mark. I agree with everything that you said.
It is kind of disappointing though to pay top dollar for a reconditioned part from a certified repair station, and have the part turn out to be scrap. You would think that if they put their signature on it, then it would have been checked out properly.
As a side note, I ordered a new set of rocker arm shafts from a very well known supplier that runs a full page d in TAP. When the rocker shafts arrived, they were in a plastic bag, with no paperwork, no packaging, and no part numbers. I called the supplier and asked why they didn't send any paperwork or at least something to say where the parts came from. Their response was that they are NOS parts and that they were in an old wooden crate with 200 other NOS rocker shafts, and the crate had "Continental" painted on the side. The guy said that they didn't have any FAA approved paperwork because the parts were older than the FAA. (I got a kick out of that! How did airplanes fly before the FAA came along?)
My mechanic refused to install the shafts because he had no way of knowing where they came from or who made them. He was particularly concerned about whether or not they were properly heat treated. I agreed with his decision. I couldn't prove where they came from either. So we ordered a new set of shafts from Aviall (I think), and they got them straight from Continental. The new shafts came in a Continental box, and had the part numbers on the box and laser etched into the shafts. They also cost over twice what the other set did (33.00 each as compared to 15.00 each). The supplier who sold me the first set agreed to take the first set of shafts back, for a full refund, with no argument at all.
So are the $33.00 shafts any better than the $15.00 shafts? Who knows? Maybe they are. They do actually look like they are finished better than the others.
Thanks for taking the time to respond to so many postings. It's always a pleasure to hear what you have to say.
Best Regards,
Wayne DelRossi
