I believe ESM 28 is clear that planes with flange shaft engines require a
longer spinner. Erco, in response, made the longer spinner "standard" (the
only one available); and explained it could be field modified for use on
earlier taper shaft engines by trimming. Even though the spinner numbers
have changed, the overall dimension has not changed from the longer flange
shaft spinner referred to in ESM 28.

Yes, that's what the spinner is supposed to do ;-)

No, when the only spinner in production is fabricated long enough to
properly fair a flange shaft installation, it will be so long as to hit the
nose cowl on a taper shaft installation. This spinner is rigid
aluminum, and fixed in size. It still must be trimmed as described to
properly fit with taper shaft engines, and more than a few mechanics can't
seem to get the nose cowl to line up with a spinner (and rely on a skullcap
spinner to cover their incompetence).
