John,
Had exactly the same thing on my recent 415C
(C85). Had the carb off 3 times. Checked everything possible, float
level, everything. In colder weather, even needed carb heat on to get
a smooth mag check, otherwise backfire and popping, giving indications of lean
condition. Eventually gave up and just kept carb heat on for taxi and
initial throttle application. However, after engine completely warmed, or
warm weather, didn't have the problem. Carb heat richens the mixture so
checked intake hoses, clamps, everything. It became the most inspected
engine around. Never did find the reason. Just lived with it and
told new owner about it. Roger

When the engine is cold, to start and run smooth, the carb heat must be applied at 1000 rpm and below. What is strange is with carb heat on the engine runs 75 rpm or so higher than with it off. After the engine warms up, carb heat works normally above 1000 rpm, ie, mag check. After flying, when on the ground and taxiing, it still behaves the same way, runs rough below 1000 rpm without carb heat on, and when activated still increases rpm slightly ?Did this before and after carb overhaul.. Anyone ever have the same problem? John============================================================================== To leave this forum go to: http://ercoupers.com/lists.htm
