"Dr. B"
The comments below are well taken! THANK YOU.

We must never lose sight of what the FAA/Government is, they are the industry's police force, looking to find...wrong...under the guize of safty and the public welfair, (which are not always the same) there are AD"s that should be issued that have not for the same reasions. I do not have the stats but there have been and are many AD's out there that are not necessary, (as well as some very necessary) costing many many dollars, and causing general aviation's fleet to decrease, this, not counting the legal system which allowed someone to collect money they did not deserve, because they spilt hot coffee on them selves. Yes I am concerned about the current thinking on ageing aircraft remember who has the power. If I had extra time I could go on and I am sure so could you, have a good day and let us keep our Ercoupes flying!!!!!! With no unnecessary government regulations.

May the Good Lord preserve me from the “it takes a village” philosophy!  And yes, it’s a sad commentary on American politics, sad but generally true. I don’t mean to imply that Americans are too stupid to take care of themselves, but you’ve heart the talk on the forum about just taking off over gross and seeing what happens…. That’s only possible because we KNOW what gross is in the first place, and THAT is only possible because the CAA required manufacturers to establish those parameters.

You’re right; we’re stuck either way. Recognizing the FAA as primarily a puff organ for GA is a good thing, but dissing FAA for being that way is not a good thing. The thing to do is use it to our own advantage. For instance, one opinion holds that the FAA wants older SLA aircraft relegated to air shows. That means US. Well, suppose that’s true. We have to USE our knowledge of FAA’s raison d’etre  to get what we want from them, namely, continued full use of our Ercoupes. It will always be an uphill fight because bureaucrats are compartmentalized and lazy. They like to put things in automatic and then go have coffee. We can’t let that happen unless the automatic mode is to our liking.

LOL! No, I don’t work for either FAA or the gov. I’m retired.

I have zero use for leftist pap about a “global village,”  or political correctness in general. At the international level I’m an American first, last, and always. I’m not ashamed of us because we’re rich, or mighty, or because our culture is so vibrant and desirable that most of the rest of the world clamors for it. It’s said that the European walks through the world as though he owned it, while the American walks through the world as though he didn’t give a damn who owned it. Works for me.

Good to hear from you.

In American politics it doesn’t get any better than that.
The above is a sad statement on America isn't it?
"Dr. B." Do you work for the FAA/Government?
It sounds to me like you do, you imply that the American people are to "stupid" to take care of them selves and need the government to "take care of them" or better yet it takes a villege-       When "political correctness dies" and the truth means more than a sound bite, or a contribution... maybe...  "

The FAA like the IRS is there to help, assist and advise...All there work is like progress, not all bad...not all good. We are stuck with it eather way.

Of course Watson?s right. FAA knows that if it weren?t for GA they?d be a backwater bureau in a do-nothing Agency.

Changes in the performance envelopes and  configurations of commercial aircraft, and consequent changes in the aviation infrastructure of airports and electronic nav gadgets proceed glacially, requiring urgent review about every ten years and certainly does NOT require constant oversight by thousands of busy bureaucratic minions.

However, we do. GA is so varied, so ebullient, so volatile, that we need an FAA to keep everything in line. Consider the alternative, that non-pilots would dictate regulations, or that people like we on this forum would self-police, and that ought REALLY to scare you.

Let?s hear it for our FAA, the only public relations firm par excellence, with teeth. At least they listen to us. Well, ok, they listen to our muscle ? AOPA, EAA.

Here?s a quote from the Fly-UL forum.  Bill Watson wrote (tongue in cheek):

I have found that most if not all FAA actions can be best described as the
FAA is a Public Relations firm for flying in the US. If anybody causes bad
PR, they will read their rules absurdely to bust you. If you do not cause
bad PR (police reports, civillian complaints, etc) they will happily let you
go about your business. If you cause good PR, you can be given get out of
jail free cards. It is all about the PR.

I?m wondering if maybe Bill hit the nail on the head.
