If I remember mine before I changed it tension on the spring causes increasing down elevator.  So, the result of the spring breaking would be no tension, or full up elevator trim.

Converting mine to the trim tab with the control on the left side cockpit was expensive and time consuming, but it does, in my opinion, provide better trim capability.

Ed,
I think this is the first time I've read about the spring being a potential problem.  My 415C has this design with the crank handle on the instrument panel.   I've seen the spring and wondered  what may be the results of a break.  Sounds like this may be a good item to replace as it appears to be an easy preventive maintenance item and low cost - a good safety/economics ratio per se, IMHO.
How do any other coupers see it?
