Hey Alan: I am not sure about the strength, but if you remove the tube that the control wheel is fastened to, you will find that the other end has a special fitting installed inside the tube (read welded) in order to fit the universal joint in to.
    I suspect that it will be difficult to get the FAA to approve the installation of stainless tube in place of the original without an engineering review by a DER, but it certainly is within the realm of owner made parts to get one done. Let us know how it goes.
     I have had a couple sets of the original tubes re-chromed, and they came out pretty good.
