Great experiment. I bet you get
great numbers when you go on longer flights, too.
As a reference for others, I’d
recommend Stick and Rudder
Chapter 19, “The Working Speeds of an Airplane” discuss and explain
this issue well. In addition, for long cross country trips for
transportation, Chapter 20, “Thin Air” discusses the speed/mileage
improvements when you fly high and lean.
Marty, I think your fuel consumption numbers
sound a bit low to me but the difference sounds reasonable between normal
cruise and slower cruise. You might want to do the experiment over longer
flights or over multiple fill-ups.
For example, I got my 7146 prop, 2400 rpm
fuel burn number of 5.4 gph through three tanks of fuel flying from
