Guys,

This thread started because one person saw the word “moderated” on a message and asked about it.

This list is, for now, depending on our mutual good behavior.

I like it that way because it can cause delays up to half a day or more for messages to be released in the hold-for-review mode.  We have spent time in the hold-for-review mode and the list was less useful.

The list owner, Tom Laird-McConnell is pretty busy at his day job at Microsoft this year.  I bet, if we needed it, he could assign several moderators.

I bet the moderation could be passive, just giving warnings, suspensions and expulsions.  But I kind of hate that idea.

If you want, we could do active moderation in the hold-for-review mode again.  As a straw poll, to avoid bunches of messages on the list, please e-mail me directly if you think there’s a sufficient need for active moderation, i.e. do you feel the environment is too threatening/negative/whatever.  I’ll post the results of the straw poll in a few days.

Here’s part of a message I posted on a fractious e-mail list this morning:

3.  Don't get defensive.  I've noticed that a lot of the "attack" e-mails result from people feeling that they've been offended.  If you ignore the "offense" and just go on with the on-topic discussion, you'll get respect AND make your point.  If you go off into defending yourself, you get lumped in with the obnoxious group.  We'll notice who's nasty and who is not.

My suggestion for now is this:  let’s let this thread die and just ask everyone to be nice to each other (but if you feel strongly, e-mail me directly as part of the straw poll).
