----[Please read http://ercoupers.com/disclaimer.htm before following any advice in this forum.]----Hi Glen,
I just got back from Oshkosh, so I didn't see your email until now. Hope you had a good time at the Ercoupe banquet.
1. The rubber gasket is there to prevent fuel spills, rain water and cold air from getting into the cockpit, as well as cushioning the fuel filler neck from the cowling skin. You can get a new one from Univair or Skyport. They are not expensive. Why not remove the old one from your old cowl and reuse it?
2. The grease is from your nose strut. The nose strut does NOT have an oilite bushing in it. It should be greased through the grease fitting about every 100 hours. If your grease layer is thick, it indicates that the brass bushing at the bottom of the nose gear housing and your strut tube are worn, allowing grease to pass between them. The grease should be wiped off before each flight because it picks up dust and dirt, and acts like rubbing compound, wearing away the bushing and the strut tube.
3. I've seen breather pipes terminating both inside the cowl and outside the cowl. I think inside is correct.
Hope to see you again soon,
Syd

----[Please read http://ercoupers.com/disclaimer.htm before following any advice in this forum.]----GangI have three questions:One, there was a rubber gasket around the headertank filler-neck, where in passes through the top of the cowling. I say "was" because I had a new cowling installed and the rubber part is no longer there! Can anyone tell me what is the purpose of this part (to keep the rain out, vibration dampening?) and where I can get a replacement? Two, there is dark Grey grease that collects on the chrome part of my nose strut after every flight. In fact, this grease seems to ooze out of the collar just above the chrome area of the strut, as well. I know we need some lubrication on that strut but this grease is really thick after every flight. Is this normal and if not, what is the cause?Three, there is a "breather" pipe that comes from the top on the engine, close to the front, and ends at the bottom of the cowling in the rear of the engine compartment. Is this pipe suppose to extend through the bottom of the cowling or terminate inside the cowling? Thanks for your help.Hope to see a lot of you at OSHKOSH!Glen Davis CFII
