I used auto gas for many years, getting the STC from EAA when it first came out. When flying on a regular basis, I had no problems. I only used Amoco Gold/Ultimate unleaded fuel.

Then I had to let the coupe sit for several months between flights.

After a while, on draining the sumps of condensation, I began to get a green goo.

It appears I got a load of gasoline containing some fuel oil/ jet fuel, etc.

Algae likes this stuff - and as a result an algacide is added to jet fuel at the refinery...previously at the fueling site......

It appears I got some contaminated fuel, and letting very little water build up in the wing tanks from condensation, we grew algae.....

Amoco's comments were simply...WE don't recommend our auto fuels to be used in aircraft....sorry.

One might ask, why don't modern autos grow algae ?????

Simply because the late auto systems are air tight...don't allow mositure to condense in the system tanks.

Also, why doesn't AV gas grow algae ?

Simply, I think,  because the lead in the AV gas kills the algae....

My experience may lead one to an incorrect conclusion.....BUT, I now ( After considerable cost in cleaning all three tanks, lines, gascolater, and carb), only use leaded av gas.....

I might consider a mixture of auto fuel and av fuel, in order to get the Algae prevention from the lead content. These engines were certified on 73 octane fuel.

Just my experience.....after using Auto fuel for many years, then having a disasterous experience......I think due, simply to condensation of moisture in the coupe's vented fuel systems.

That happened almost 10 years ago...... no algae problems since....
