My $0.02 would be to consider new cylinders. If an overhaul is $550, I'd probably pay the extra $250 or so per cylinder to go new. In fact, most reputable rebuild shops will not rebuild small Continental cylinders, but rather require that they be replaced. The folks I've talked to said they had bad luck doing rebuilds on them.

Again, just my $0.02. I had new ECI Titans put on my C75, now C85.

As you all know, I decided to do a major overhaul to my C-75.
Upon closer examination of the logs, I found that my engine has only 1358 hours SMOH, but looking inside the crankcase, I agree the overhaul is not a
bad idea. No controversy here.

However, I also realized that the engine is only 328 hours STOH, meaning that
the cylinders were overhauled only 328 hours ago. My compressions read
consistently good, except for a hissing sound on one of the cylinders. It
appears I have 3 choices:

1. To legally call the whole project a major overhaul, I would need to change pistons, rings, exhaust valves, and springs, at an estimated cost of $ 550 per cylinder. All this, perhaps unecessarily. If funds were plentiful (they are not), we would not mind going for this overkill in terms of safety and peace
of mind.

2. Do only a "return to service" minimum overhaul on the cylinders, which will cost like $ 300 per cylinder (if they don't find anything bad). However, I
could not legally call the project a major overhaul.

3. Do nothing with the cylinders, since they only have 300 hours and
compressions are reading good. The whole project would only be a "bottom"
overhaul.

Please bear in mind that before breaking my cam follower, I was flying rather
happily, and had no immediate need for any type of engine overhaul.

I know I am opening a technical-opinion-can of worms, however, I would like to
hear different points of view before I make my very own decision.
