The original generator only produces 13 amperes, and that's on
a good day. My landing lights (in the main gear) drain like 10 amps
each. To make things worse, my dual beacons (top and bottom fuselage) drain
11 amps, so the beacon on soaks all the current from the generator, and
turning both landing lights on dips the ammeter to -20. I am a sport pilot and
don't fly at night, but the landing lights are useful to increase visibility in
the pattern and whenever my traffic detector is triggered.
I am working on 337 field approvals to install both the 20 amp
generator (not included on the type certificate of the 415-C) and
modern strobes, which drain less current than my current beacons. If you
have a 415-D or a later variant, the type certificate includes the 13, 20 and 35
amp generators, so you could upgrade generators with just a log entry. The 415-C
type certificate only includes the 13 amp generator, so you need a field
approval to legally upgrade.
You have to plan carefully and take into account the current consumption
(in amperes) of everything you are trying to install.
Hope this helps

Hi gang. Looks like we've been able to lick the brake problem so I'm thinking of spending the dough on some lights. Does the original generator produce enough juice to run strobes at the wing tips and landing lights? Also. which strobe/position light models are the right ones?Ed Granato N93452
