Greg;
First, I'm sure an A&P can okay the tank's repairs and more than likely an
IA can inspect the repairs and sign them off. Either you have a bad
repair or a bad person taking your money each year.
Possibly/probably both... I took my tank to 3 different places for repair.
The first place got the endplate off of it and got the baffle/rib installed
but had problems getting the tank's endplate back on. The endplate
originally had the sides folded over and (silver?) soldered. When the
endplate was removed, the sides were unsoldered and unfolded but when
reinstalling, the folds cracked when trying to refold them. The 2nd place
was going to make a new endplate out of stainless with a larger lip that
could have been riveted in but had problems trying to get the lip to bend
correctly and gave up after waiting over 3 weeks. I took it to a 3rd place
and he cut off the fold and silver soldered the original endplate back onto
the end. It wasn't 'pretty' but it holds fuel.
Second, I've got a terneplate tank hanging around, but forgot what side
it's for. It'll be next week before I can give you an answer. Can the
terneplate tank be replaced with an aluminum one?
Al
I'm not sure about replacing my terneplate tank with an aluminum tank. The
aluminum tanks I have seen don't have the 'notch' area for where the landing
gear are on the under S/N 813's. I had picked up an aluminum tank from
Wentworth but it had slosh coating in it that was peeling off and the
inspector/mechanic wouldn't install that one so I returned it. I didn't
check to see if it would have fit...
Thanks,
