Lynn, this sounds like the "Scalp Saver" Service Kit available from Univair.  It is called SK-23.  I have it on my airplane.  I could send you a picture, if you like.

Fellow Couper's: I am in the middle of a restoration project (1949 G model serial # 5030) and need some assistance. (Yes, I know the serial number does not match G models but that is another story)
    The cowling has some type of support system that holds it open that I need to make parts for. I remember seeing this on a Coupe once, but I can not remember where or when. Both side cowlings have an angle bracket with a hole on the bottom. The hole is slightly elongated, and is about 5/16 inch in diameter. Nothing else is attached. I believe there was some sort of rod that held the cowling(s) open. But I have no information as to the length or shape.
    I would greatly appreciate any information any of you may have that could pertain to this cowling support system.
